Devon thought it was disgusting, bringing thoseâ¦those villains in there. The Nortyr had raided the village he had lived in every year until it had been burned to the ground by the Nortyr. They were worse than monsters, worse than other kingdoms, and worse than anything.
How could Abbot Samuel trust them? Had he been beguiled? Had his truth spell not worked? He didnât know much about magic but he knew that the Nortyr raided for weapons and magic jewelry. Could this group have a necklace or something that might block the power of the abbotâs spell?
It was the only logical explanation. How else could he agree to work with monsters such as these?
He didnât dare to disobey, though. He knew the abbot was powerful and would check his work to make sure his map was accurate. He was a smart man, Abbot Samuel, even if he had made a grave mistake this time. But Devon could fix this. He could make this right.
It required him to hurry, though.
His decision made, he got to work, focused first on the most recognizable parts of the map, and gradually added detail, little by little and stroke by stroke, until the map was complete. He dared not check the time. While he knew there wouldnât be enough of it, he still did what he could to make this work. He couldnât lie and he couldnât mislead, but he could still bring vengeance against the Nortyr with the truth.
The young monk worked late into the night and stopped only when he heard Abbot Samuel approach the door. Hastily, he rested his head on the tabletop, made sure not to smudge the still drying map, and pretended to be asleep.
âOh, Devon, you silly boy. Iâd rather you were in bed than asleep at a desk in here, but I guess that was once me.â
The abbot took the map carefully off the desk, put it in his Inventory, and spread a blanket on Devonâs âsleepingâ form before he left.
He was kind. There was no doubt about that, but that was why Devon had to do what he had done. Since he had already put the other map in his Inventory, he had no need to gather anything but his shoes.
Quietly, he hurried to another door that led in and out of the monastery, where one of his friends was tasked with watching late in the night.
Devon approached him. âIâm on business for the abbot,â he told his friend, not happy that he had to tell a lie to bring greater truth but not seeing any other way out of this. âDonât tell anyone I was here.â
âWow! I canât believe Abbot Samuel trusted you,â his friend said, his eyes agleam with how impressed he was.
Since he could say nothing more that wouldnât add to the lie, he chose not to reply. He left the monastery and the last thing he saw was his friendâs proud but slightly confused face.
He crossed the land ahead until he reached the castle of the foreign soldiers.
